Least Concern

The Vermiculated Screech-Owl has a large range that includes moist and humid tropical forest habitats in lowland and foothill zones of western, eastern, and southern Mexico, Central America, and scattered foothill sites in Northern South America and the eastern slope of the Andes. The global population of this owl species is unknown but believed to be large and stable enough to warrant a conservation rating of Least Concern.

Overview

Vermiculated Screech-Owl: Small owl with fine mottled gray-brown or red-brown upperparts, and fine streaks and mottling on gray-brown or red-brown underparts. Facial disk mottled gray-brown with limited, narrow black rim. Ear tufts small. Eyes yellow and bill olive-gray.


Range and Habitat

Vermiculated Owl: Distinct populations occur in parts of Mexico, Central and South America. May be treated as separate species. Resides in foothills and lowlands in humid tropical forests. May be found up to 3,300 feet in elevation.
