SPONSORED ADVERTISEMENTS

General

Brown-chested Martin: Medium-sized swallow with gray-brown upperparts and white underparts with a brown band on the chest and brown on the flanks. Tail, wings, and front are dark brown. The forked tail is short to medium length and wings are very long. Sexes similar.

Range and Habitat

Brown-chested Martin: This species breeds in grasslands and other open areas in much of South America. Vagrants in North America have shown up in coastal areas and other open habitats from North Carolina to Massachusetts. These birds winter in South America and Panama and very rarely in North America.

Breeding and Nesting

Brown-chested Martin: Four eggs are laid in a nest constructed with grass. Nests are found in many places, including on buildings, under bridges, in burrows in embankments, and tree cavities. Nests have also been found in the holes of termite nests. Incubation is carried out by the female and lasts for two weeks.

Foraging and Feeding

Brown-chested Martin: Feeds on flying insects by catching them with its wide mouth while flying over open areas. Foraging results in swooping, erratic flight with occasional hovering.

Vocalization

Brown-chested Martin: Gurgling and trilling notes that go up and down in pitch.

Similar Species

Brown-chested Martin: Bank Swallow is smaller and has more clear cut band on chest. Northern Rough-winged Swallow lacks the dark band on the chest.
