Rose-ringed Parakeet

Rose-ringed Parakeet: Large, green parakeet with pale red ring around neck, black moustache stripe, pale blue nape, red eye-ring and bill. Tail is long, slender, green with blue central feathers. Legs and feet are gray. Established in Miami. Feeds on buds, fruit, vegetables, nuts, berries and seeds.

● Foraging & Feeding: Rose-ringed Parakeet: Eats fruits, seeds, berries, and flowers; travels in large noisy flocks of 50 to several thousand birds when foraging.

● Breeding & nesting: Rose-ringed Parakeet: Lays two to six white eggs in a tree cavity or crevice; up to six pairs have been recorded nesting in the same tree. Female incubates eggs for 22 to 24 days while fed by the male; young fledge when about 2 months old.

● Similar species: Rose-ringed Parakeet: None in range.

To find the ITIS page for a bird species go to the ITIS web site advanced search and report page at http://www.itis.gov/advanced_search.html. You can enter the TSN or the common name of the bird. It will return the ITIS page for that bird. Another way to obtain the ITIS page is to use the Google search engine. Enter the string ITIS followed by the taxonomic ID, for example "ITIS 178041" will return the page for the Allen's Hummingbird.
