Common Pauraque

Common Pauraque: Medium nightjar with dark-streaked, mottled gray upperparts, white throat, black chin, rufous face, pale gray-brown underparts. Wings have brown and black bars, white band at base of primaries visible in flight. The gray tail is long, with dark edges and white patches.

● Song: "puc, puc, puc, puc p'weeEER", "wheet wheet wheeeer"

● Foraging & Feeding: Common Pauraque: Feeds on insects; forages in flight close to ground; sometimes forages on the ground.

● Breeding & nesting: Common Pauraque: Two buff to pale pink eggs, marked with small red brown spots, are laid on the bare ground near a bush or tree. Incubation ranges from 19 to 20 days and is carried out by both parents.

● Similar species: Common Pauraque: Common and Lesser nighthawks have long pointed wings, long, notched tails, and different voices.

To find the ITIS page for a bird species go to the ITIS web site advanced search and report page at http://www.itis.gov/advanced_search.html. You can enter the TSN or the common name of the bird. It will return the ITIS page for that bird. Another way to obtain the ITIS page is to use the Google search engine. Enter the string ITIS followed by the taxonomic ID, for example "ITIS 178041" will return the page for the Allen's Hummingbird.
