Least Concern

The Rock Pigeon can be found in western and southern Europe, North Africa and South Asia. This species has a rather large range, and may be found in pairs during breeding seasons. Natural habitats for this species include cliffs on coastlines. Some populations have been introduced in North America and Ireland. Nests are typically built on a ledge that is man-made or natural, but well-hidden. These birds feed on the ground on seeds and insects, and are commonly found roosting in colonies on walls and statues. The conservation rating of the Rock Pigeon is Least Concern.

SUMMARY

Overview

Rock Pigeon: This is a large, highly variably colored dove. The wild form has a gray body, dark blue-gray head, neck, breast, and white rump. The wings are gray with two black bars. It has a gray rounded tail with a dark terminal band. Forages on the ground; feeds on grass, seeds, grains, clover and berries. Swift direct flight. Sexes are similar.

 

Range and Habitat

Rock Pigeon: Common throughout the continental United States, southern Canada, Mexico, and urban areas throughout the world. These birds thrive in human habitats, and are most populous in large cities, but can also be found in suburban and rural locations, agricultural lands and open shrub. Pigeons do not migrate.
