CONSERVATION STATUS

Least Concern

It has also occured on Palau as a vagrant. Although the global population of this species has not been estimated, the population of this common species is believed to be large and stable enough to warrant a conservation rating of Least Concern.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Striated Herons are vagrants to Palau. One was seen on Palau on May 3, 2005, but its origin was not clear.
  • These herons build their nests on a platform of sticks near the ground and close to water.
  • They occasionally drop a feather or leaf carefully on the water surface and use it as bait, waiting for a curious fish to come and investigate.
  • A group of herons has many collective nouns, including a "battery", "hedge", "pose", "rookery", and "scattering" of herons."
