Least Concern

The Pacific Long-tailed Cuckoo has a rather small breeding range of 108,000 square kilometers. It breeds in forest habitats in New Zealand, and winters in a variety of forest habitats on islands in the south and western Pacific, including Palau. Although the size of its global population is unknown, it is believed to be large and stable enough to warrant a conservation rating of Least Concern.

Overview

Pacific Long-tailed Cuckoo: Large cuckoo, buff barring on brown back and wings, white underparts with black-brown streaks. Black-brown mottled mask, buff eyebrow. Thick, gray-brown and yellow-olive bill. Long wings. Very long tail with black-brown and red-brown barring. Sexes similar, juvenile has more pale spots above, and finer streaks below.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • In Maori, this bird is known as the Koekoea. It is also called the screamer, due to its loud call.
  • The Pacific Long-tailed Cuckoo is also known as the Long-tailed Cuckoo or Long-tailed Koel.
  • These are brood parasites. Adults lay their eggs in the nests of brown creepers, whiteheads, and yellowheads. Once the cuckoo chicks hatch, the imitate the calls of the host's chicks and then evict the rival chicks from the nest.
  • A group of cuckoos is collectively known as an "asylum", a "cooch" and a "family" of cuckoos.
