Least Concern

The Intermediate Egret has a large range of more than nine million square kilometers. This heron species occurs a variety of wetland habitats in Oman, Pakistan, India, southern China, Japan, southeastern Asia, and much of Indonesia. The size of the population is unknown and declining in some areas but believed to be stable and large enough to warrant a conservation rating of Least Concern.

SUMMARY

Overview

Intermediate Egret: Medium to large white heron with rounded head, orange-brown eyes, gray-green lores, and an orange-red bill. Long wings. Medium length bill, tail short with a square tip. Long, red and black legs, black feet. Sexes similar. Juvenile and non-breeding birds have orange-yellow bill, yellow lores, and no red on legs.

  • Alternate names for this species include Median Egret, Smaller Egret, or Yellow-billed Egret.
  • Just as their name implies, the Intermediate Egret is between the size of the Great Egret and the Little Egret, though they are closer in size to the Little Egret.
