CONSERVATION STATUS

Endangered

The Hawaiian Duck is a medium to large waterfowl species that only occurs on the Hawaiian islands of Kauai, Niihau, Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. It occurs in a variety of freshwater wetland habitats from the lowlands to high elevations and uses its bill to forage for small creatures and plant matter in shallow water. The population of the Hawaiian Duck is believed to be around 2,200 individuals and is threatened by destruction of wetlands, introduced predators that prey on them and introduced species that degrade their habitat. It has been given a conservation rating of Endangered.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Historically they were found on all but two of the main Hawaiian islands, by 1962 hunting and loss of habitat had extirpated them from all but Kauai and Niihau.
  • Hybridization with mallards is the largest threat to this dwindling species.
  • The Hawaiian Duck is known locally as Koloa Maoli, which means "native duck".
