The Red-lored Parrot is a medium-sized parrot native to moist and evergreen tropical forests from eastern Mexico south to northern Brazil. Birds that have escaped from captivity have established populations in parts of Florida and California. It forages for seeds and fruits in the crowns of trees and nests in tree cavities. The Red-lored Parrot is common in many parts of its natural range and is given a conservation rating of Least Concern.

Overview

Red-lored Parrot: Medium-sized green parrot with red front and patch in secondaries, blue on crown, and yellow on cheeks and in tail. Black primaries, yellow-pink bill, gray legs and feet, and medium-length tail. It has quick, direct flight with shallow wing beats on medium-length wings.

 

Range and Habitat

Red-lored Parrot: In its native, tropical range, it can be found in moist and evergreen tropical forests. Introduced populations in southern Florida and central and southern California occur in parks and areas with exotic trees, which they feed upon. Populations are resident but make movements in search of food sources.
