General

Kauai Amakihi: Small honeycreeper, olive-green above and pale yellow to creamy gray below. Face has brown lores and pale yellow supercillium. Chin and throat are pale yellow, wings and tail are gray. Sexes are similar. Juveniles are more dull.

Range and Habitat

Kauai Amakihi: Endemic to Kauai. Found in ohia and mixed ohia-koa forests, typically above 2,000' in elevation.

Breeding and Nesting

Kauai Amakihi: One to four white eggs, with red- to dark brown irregular markings, are laid in a cup-shaped nest built of ohia twigs and aerial roots, and mosses, bark, and leaves. Female incubates eggs for 14 days. Chicks fledge 18 days after hatching.

Foraging and Feeding

Kauai Amakihi: Forages on the trunks and limbs of ohia and other trees for a variety of insects, including grubs and caterpillars. Also eats berries, fruit, and nectar.

Vocalization

Kauai Amakihi: Song is a variable flat trill, sounds like a quickly repeated "chee". Call is a buzzy "tseet" and a squeaky "chip".
